Vintage Notes : “Classic” and “perfect” are just two accolades being bestowed upon the 2012 Napa Valley growing season and harvest. Textbook conditions saw near ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool, often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until Napa Valley’s treasured wine grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into the cellar.
The abundance of perfectly ripe grapes–with a smooth balance of acids and sugars–provided a broad sweep of opportunities for winemakers to cull only the most select fruit. The vineyards of Napa Valley are intentionally farmed at lower yields bringing only the very best grapes to harvest.
This vintage, while as much as thirty percent higher than the previous two vintages smaller crops, is on par with near-normal yields.

Winemaking Notes : The core of this wine is the original old vine clone planted at the estate and layered with clone 332 and 214. Small lot fermentations and cold soak pre fermentation, with some of these very small tank lots enjoying extended maceration. Nineteen months in 70% new French oak led to the final blend of 93% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
Vintage Notes : Vintage 2010 welcomed the return of rainfall and the end to three dry years. The summer brought cooler than normal temperatures, where constant vigilance and rigorous canopy management averted mildew and pest problems. Rains during flowering were the first hit to the crop size. Heat spikes in Napa Valley in early September were the second hit. Clusters only two weeks away from ripening shriveled under the sustained 100+ degree days. Once the vines and their extremely modest crop survived the heat, the balance of fall was mild and wonderful. Thus clusters of intense color and fully ripe flavors were hand-picked and gently transported to fermenters allowing for good concentration of flavors across all varietals. Yields were low. Very low.
